UPC and EAN check digit calculator
This UPC check digit calculator works out the last digit: type a UPC, EAN or GTIN without it to get the check digit, or the full number to see whether it is right. It works for UPC-A (12 digits), EAN-13, EAN-8 and GTIN-14.
Good to know
What the check digit is
The last digit of every UPC, EAN and GTIN is worked out from the others. A scanner does the same sum, so a number that was misread or mistyped is caught instead of ringing up the wrong product.
How it is worked out
- Starting from the right of the number without its check digit, multiply the digits by 3 and 1 in turn.
- Add up the results.
- The check digit is what you add to reach the next multiple of 10 (0 if the sum already is one).
- Example: for 03600029145 the sum is 58, so the check digit is 2 and the UPC is 036000291452.

A right check digit is not a registered number
Any digits can be given a correct check digit. Whether the number belongs to your brand is a different matter: UPC and EAN numbers are licensed through GS1, and most retailers and marketplaces check that the number is yours.
Questions
Why do 12 or 13 digits give two answers?
12 digits can be a full UPC-A, which is checked, or the first 12 digits of an EAN-13, which gets its 13th digit. 13 digits can be a full EAN-13 or the first 13 of a GTIN-14. Pick the one you are making.
Is a UPC-A the same as an EAN-13?
A UPC-A is an EAN-13 that starts with 0: scanners read 036000291452 and 0036000291452 as the same product.
Are my numbers saved or sent anywhere?
