Shape First photo landscape or square; thumbnails are cropped, so leave space around the product
File size Over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection
Format JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG or HEIC; no transparency (it shows as black); sRGB color

How Etsy shows your photos

  • The first photo is the thumbnail in search and on your shop page, so make it landscape or square.
  • Thumbnails are cropped: keep space around the product so nothing important is cut.
  • Etsy has no white-background rule. A clean, simple background that suits the item works.
  • Transparent parts of a PNG show as black on Etsy, so the photos are saved without transparency.

Required and recommended

Required rules can get a listing rejected; recommended ones affect how it looks, for example zoom. Our photo check uses these:

  • JPG or PNG (the files we can check) (required)
  • First photo at least 635 px wide and tall (recommended)
  • At least 2,000 px wide and tall, as Etsy recommends (recommended)
  • Landscape or square, as Etsy asks for the first photo (recommended)
  • 1 MB or smaller, so it finishes uploading (recommended)

How can I check my photos against the Etsy rules?

Open Etsy photos, add your photos and turn on “Just check my photos”: each one is checked as it is, and you see what passes and why the rest fail. It reads JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF photos. Turn it off to make a 3000 × 2250 px copy that is checked again.
