Every photo is enlarged to the marketplace’s size. A small original still passes the size rules but looks soft when shoppers zoom in.

Usually the background is not pure white, the product is too small in the frame, or there is text or a logo on the image. Run the photo through this checker to see which rule fails.

No. Etsy allows lifestyle photos. For lifestyle shots, turn off “Center product on white” and use “Fill the frame”.

JPG has no transparency. PNG keeps the transparent background and every pixel.

Lossy formats lose some fine detail. At the default quality of 75 it is hard to see in most photos; raise the quality if you need a closer match to the original.

Some images are already well optimized. In that case we keep your original file, so you never download a bigger version.

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly. For photos that makes files larger than JPG; it is best for graphics, screenshots and images that need transparency.

All current browsers can. Some older desktop apps and upload forms still cannot; use JPG for those.

Cropping keeps the original pixels. The image is re-encoded at high quality, or losslessly if you choose PNG.

The square uses as much of the original as possible. To get an exact size like 1080×1080, use Resize Image for Instagram afterwards.
