Why compress to 50KB?

Job and application sites often limit passport-style photos and scanned signatures to 50KB. That is enough for a clear head-and-shoulders photo at the small sizes these forms display.

How the 50KB target is reached

  • Quality is lowered until the file is 50KB or less, never below quality 30.
  • If that is not enough, the image is scaled down step by step; the final dimensions are shown.
  • 50KB is counted with 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, so the file also passes forms that count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes.
