Why convert HEIC to PNG?

PNG keeps every pixel of the iPhone photo exactly, so no more detail is lost on the way. Use it when the picture will be edited further or printed, or when an app wants PNG; for sharing, JPG makes a far smaller file.

Before you convert

  • The PNG keeps the photo’s full size in pixels.
  • Camera details and location are not carried into the PNG, since the picture is saved again.
  • Live Photos keep only the still picture; the short video is not part of the PNG.

Questions

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC is a compressed photo format; PNG stores every pixel without compression loss. A 12-megapixel iPhone photo often becomes a PNG several times larger. For sharing or upload forms, HEIC to JPG is the better choice.
